The son of ʾImām ʾAḥmad, ʾImām Ṣāliḥ ibn ʾAḥmad ibn Ḥanbal (رحمه الله) states:
“My father said:
"They [the Muʿtazilah] used against me the ẓāhir (apparent meaning) of the Qurʾān, to justify their [kufr] beliefs after he, the Muʿtazilī, said: 'I see that you adhere to ḥadīth.'””
ʾImām adh-Dhahabī (رحمه الله) states:
“922 - Hanbal ibn Isḥāq said:
It was said to Abū ʿAbd Allāh:
"What is the maʿnā (meaning) of: 'And He is with you'?"
He replied:
"His ʿilm (knowledge)—His ʿilm encompasses everything, while our Rabb is over the ʿArsh, without ḥadd (limit) or ṣifah (aspect describing modality).”
—Narrated by al-Lālakāʾī.”
